History
Wake Internal Medicine Consultants, Inc. (WIMC) is a professional corporation that grew out of the Internal Medicine practice of Dr. Thomas Umphlet. Dr. Umphlet began his practice in 1938 at the Cameron Apartments building in Raleigh, North Carolina, with a medical office and onsite lab. This lab was the only approved serology lab in North Carolina that was not state owned. His office moved to 119 S. Boylan Avenue in Raleigh in 1947 as partners were added.
The practice was incorporated in 1981 and was moved into the Rex Hospital medical office building at the then new Lake Boone Trail site. The physicians practiced at that location until 1985, when the practice moved into the new 3100 Blue Ridge Road building, the current location of our main office.
In 2008 the practice expanded to North Raleigh with offices in the new Durant Medical Center. The name of the North Raleigh office is Wake Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, reflecting the addition of Pediatrics to the practice.
Currently, WIMC consists of 21 providers. The practice offers general medical care to adults at the West Raleigh office and children and adults at the North Raleigh office. Subspecialty care is offered in the following areas:
- Cardiology
- Gastroenterology
- Geriatrics
- Pulmonology
- Sleep Medicine
- Pediatrics
Located at both of our locations, our affiliated Rx Urgent Care provides extended coverage for the practice 7 days a week. You can find out more about our GI specialists at their Wake Gastroenterology website. We also work closely with another affiliate of ours, Wake Research Associates, which is an independent multi-center clinical research site.
