Pediatrics

Pediatrics is very different from adult medicine in that the relationship is not just between the doctor and patient, but also the patient’s parents. This dynamic relationship requires trust and communication between all parties so that the best level of medical care can be provided. Our pediatricians at Wake Pediatrics have a unique dual specialty distinction called Med-Peds. This means our physicians are dually board certified in pediatrics and internal medicine. Having this Med-Peds distinction allows our physicians to treat both children and adults.

PURPOSE OF PEDIATRIC MEDICINE

The pediatrics specialty usually treats children from birth to 21 years old. Pediatricians are considered primary care physicians and are usually the first line of medical care for children. The purpose of pediatric medicine is to provide preventative health measures, as well as administer medical care for illness, minor injuries and infections. Pediatrics also focuses on the mental and physical development of children to determine if a child is developing properly, and to diagnose/address possible health risks in the future.

WELL CHILD VISITS

Well child visits are the cornerstone of pediatric medicine. You can find out when you should schedule your child’s next visit to the pediatrician using our pediatric well child visit schedule. These visits allow pediatricians to assess the health of children throughout their development. This can be very beneficial by providing pediatricians to catch illnesses and address potential health risks before they become visibly apparent.

CONDITIONS TREATED

There are many conditions and medical problems that are treated under the pediatrics umbrella. The focus that pediatricians place on the complete development of a child requires physician attention to cover a broad spectrum of physical, behavioral and mental conditions. Here are some of the more common conditions pediatricians diagnose and treat:

  • Illnesses (chronic and temporary)
  • Infections
  • Minor injuries
  • Diseases
  • Physical and mental developmental disorders
  • Depression
  • Behavioral issues
  • Social disorders
  • Malformations
  • Learning disabilities
